Words and poetry by.…Precious Foreman, the 2023 Prince George’s County Youth Poetry Laureate.
That will be the way that Foreman, 16, named Prince George’s County Youth Poet Laureate, will likely be introduced on paper and on the mic for the next year. She will begin with a tour of performance at county libraries beginning with the Upper Marlboro Library on April 3 at 4 pm.
Precious Foreman, who is home schooled, received the honor during the 2023 Youth Poet Laureate Finals at the Prince George's Ball Room February 25. She has been making a name for herself around the DMV. Foreman won a cash award prize at the WBL Combine (Words Beats and Life decatlathon of literary challenges), an annual recitation contest.
"Prince George's County is once again embracing and celebrating the excellence of its youth,” says Prince George’s County Poet Laureate Sistah Joy. “At this time when so many are seeking answers and solutions, these teen poets are stepping up to offer their voice and their views on significant social issues being faced in their homes, schools and communities. I'm honored to be part of the welcoming committee that is inviting them into their new positions of leadership and opportunity. Congratulations to Prince George's County 2023 Youth Poet Laureate, Precious Foreman, and each of the 5 Poetry Ambassadors that will serve our County in 2023 through poetry.”
The Landover, MD resident will serve for one year traveling throughout the county speaking at official events presenting poetry, participating in poetry workshops, and speaking to youth and adults to share her poetry and her views as a poet and youth leader at libraries, schools, and community/organization events.
Additionally, the 2023 Prince George's County Poetry Ambassadors include Arianna Bosley, Chimwekele Okoro, Saniya Pearson, Diana Plata, and Kiara Ramirez.
“Thank you to all who have and/or will support our Youth Poet Laureate and teen Poetry Ambassadors welcoming their voices and views on social issues as well as giving them the opportunity to grow to become the leaders that Prince George's County can be proud of. Consider poetry for your upcoming community, business, school, and church events. Be part of the growing community of poets and poetry enthusiasts who are making a positive difference in our community,” Sistah Joy said in an earlier statement.
