The National Museum of Language To Host "Social Justice: Themes in Song and Verse from Africa and the Diaspora
An Exploration of Social Justice Themes in Song and Verse from Africa and the Diaspora is a multilingual program presented by the National Museum of Language, made possible through a grant from the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, and in collaboration with Howard University, offers a unique opportunity to hear live readings of poetry on social justice themes by historical and contemporary African and Afro-American writers. The event will take place on Saturday May 20, 2023; 2-4pm at the Greenbelt Branch Library, Prince George’s County Memorial Library System System.
The works featured in the program will be presented in their original languages and English or Spanish translations. Some program highlights include original poetry written and performed by Howard University students, and rarely heard early poetry of Langston Hughes, which will be presented in Spanish translation as well. There will be a live performance of traditional African drumming and recorded performances of songs based on social justice themes. The audience will be encouraged to participate in an interactive discussion of the themes of the presentation.
