For decades, women have fought for equality in the United States. To celebrate this, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) delivered remarks in Prince George's County at his 21st Women's Equality Day Luncheon on August 25, 2023.
“I’m honored to welcome you all to the 21st annual Fifth District Women’s Equality Luncheon. This event is always a highlight of my year and it’s a privilege to bring together such impressive women who contribute so much to our community… Aren't we proud of Maryland? Team Maryland's work serves as an example for the rest of America. Our commitment to reproductive rights and women's freedom cannot stop at the Maryland border.”
This annual event drew hundreds of women from across the state of Maryland and the Fifth Congressional District. It highlighted the work of local and national political leaders working to advance women's rights, including candidate for U.S. Senate Angela Alsobrooks, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, and Director Shalanda Young. Congressman Hoyer wasted no time speaking of the work these incredible women have done.
“Aruna Miller, our Lieutenant Governor is doing an extraordinary job of raising the flag of freedom for families, for women, for Marylanders. Thank you for that, Aruna… Shalanda is crucial. She's not famous, but she is the linchpin. Every day, Shalanda demonstrates how America can excel as decisions are made by, not for, women.”
Hoyer also remarked on the terrible damage made in recent months to the progress made for women’s rights.
“We gather today at a time when women have fewer rights than they did when we started hosting this event twenty-one years ago. Last summer, the Supreme Court's radical and misguided ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson, undid decades, as a matter of fact, a half a century of progress towards gender equality and personal freedom. In an instant, the court erased the 50-year-old precedent of upholding a Woman's constitutional right to make her own health decisions.”
