February Events At Publick Playhouse Announced By Dept Of Parks And Rec, Prince George’s County
The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is pleased to announce a variety of upcoming programs at the Publick Playhouse in Hyattsville, MD.
Since 1947, the historic Playhouse continues to serve as a popular venue for music and modern dance, musical theater, historical drama, educational programs, and monthly events for seniors. With its plush seating for 494, the theatre is one of the two surviving Art Deco theatres in Prince George's County. Family Fun Series: Janice the Griot
Join accomplished storyteller and official Griot of the State of Maryland, Janice the Griot, as she shares interactive tales from the African and African American experience featuring fun, instruments, puppets, songs, and rhymes. Children will hear tales of Anansi the Spider, Bre'r Rabbit, and other tricksters while they learn important life lessons. Best for Ages 3-12. Tickets: $6/person. Sweet Honey in the Rock
The Grammy-nominated, iconic, women-led African American vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock marks its 50th anniversary with a powerful three-year celebration that will honor its storied past and set the course for the future of the group, which has been called "one of the most dynamic, versatile and still relevant musical collectives in music today." Sweet Honey in the Rock has remained at the forefront of the ever-evolving cultural landscape, while creating a positive, loving, and socially conscious message through their music. For All Ages. Rosa Parks & Friends
Take a journey through time with Rosa Parks to where some of the most remarkable figures from history come to life. Meet abolitionists including Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, and civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and, of course, Rosa Parks! An important story for any audience, this show gives a remarkable view of the challenges met by these amazing Black Americans.
