Reparations Debate Comes To The County Council
Council Member Wanika Fisher Holds Press Conference on Reparations Resolution
District 2 Council Member Wanika Fisher held a press conference, March 21 to discuss her resolution that supports creation of a new state commission to study reparations to African American descendants of those previously enslaved in Maryland. The resolution, CR-005-2024, will be considered in the Health, Human Services and Public Safety Committee on Thursday.
Fisher’s resolution, which is co-sponsored by the entire council, encourages the Maryland General Assembly to establish such a commission during the current legislative session. The Maryland Reparations Commission (Harriet Tubman Community Investment Act) has been introduced in the Maryland House of Delegates every year since 2020, but the bill has not made it out of committee.
