Council members Join Passion & Compassion To Help Feed Hundreds Of Residents In Need to Help Commemorate World Hunger Day May 28
Two county council members will team up to provide the most basic of services to residents.
Prince George’s County Council Members Wanika Fisher (District 2) and Eric Olson (District 3) will co-sponsor a special World Hunger Day food distribution, joining with nonprofit Passion & Compassion to feed 300 families in need. It will take place May 28 at Park Tanglewood, 5671 Tanglewood Drive, Riverdale Park, MD.
The event will begin with a press conference at 8:15 a.m. where the council members will speak about hunger in their districts and countywide. Data shows more than 16 percent of children in Prince George’s County live in households that experienced food insecurity at some point last year. Council Members Olson and Fisher will be available at the event.
Passion & Compassion Board Chair Michael Herman, Esq. and Executive Director Ben Slye will talk about work their organization has done for more than a decade to address hunger in the region, including distributing more than 2.8 million pounds of produce and 3 million meals throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C. in 2023.
Between 9 and 11 a.m., volunteers, including council staff, will prepare bags of food for distribution, and free healthy meals will be served to those waiting. At 11 a.m., individuals who rely on Passion & Compassion will speak about what food distributions like this one mean for their families, with the distribution starting immediately after.
