Grant Funds For Safer Roads
Prince George’s Receives Over $650,000 To Improve Road Safety
Some county roads will soon get safety upgrades.
On June 5, US Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, joined by U.S. Congressman Glenn Ivey announced two grants totaling $651,200 to improve road safety in Prince George’s County.
The City of Laurel and the City of New Carrollton will receive $451,200 and $200,000, respectively. The funds will aid each city in developing a comprehensive safety plan for preventing serious injury and fatal roadway crashes among road users.
The US Department of Transportation (DOT), an executive department of the federal government, provides these funds through its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, which assists communities with developing and implementing safety action plans to ensure that drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are safe on roadways.
“Part of our effort to modernize Maryland’s transportation infrastructure includes a commitment to ending traffic deaths and severe injuries due to car crashes,” Senator Cardin said in a statement. “This federal investment in developing safety plans for Laurel and New Carrollton will be critical in creating streets across the state that are safer, better connected and built for multimodal transportation.”
The SS4A was established and funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, legislation the lawmakers worked to pass. In fiscal year 2023, the SS4A program delivered over $28 million to safety action plan projects in Maryland.
“Many of our aging local roads were built without adequate safety features, which put pedestrians at risk and resulted in far too many accidents and even tragic deaths. We worked to pass the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to invest in safer, more accessible roads for all who use them,” said Senator Van Hollen.
In separate statements, Mayor Keith R. Sydnor (Laurel) and Mayor Katrina Dodro (New Carrollton) thanked the Department of Transportation for awarding their communities with the grant.
