Biden Steps Down From Race, Maryland Leaders Respond

By Raoul Dennis

"The American political system is truly fascinating,” says M.H. Jim Estepp, president and CEO of the Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable, a non-partisan business group. “There is never a dull moment.  The Democratic Party will be challenged at the national level and down ballots could be affected as a result of President Biden stepping aside.  We don't know how this will turn out but come November 5th we will have a President-Elect."

“This historic moment is a testament to the strength of American democracy. The values Democrats are fighting for — decency, freedom, and equality for all — transcend any one person or election,” U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-District 5) said of President Joe Biden’s July 21 announcement to suspend his  campaign.

Although Estepp stopped short of any endorsement – the Roundtable does not endorse candidates – a number of Maryland leaders were fast to endorse Kamala Harris.

“It’s paramount that Democrats come together quickly and unite behind a qualified leader. Kamala Harris is that leader.” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, a longtime friend of Harris’.

 Rep. Hoyer endorsed Harris.

“I am proud to offer my full support to my friend Kamala Harris,” Hoyer said in a statement.  “Vice President Harris has shown herself to be a strong, experienced, and effective leader. Her service at the local, state, and federal level makes her uniquely qualified to be President of the United States.”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore released a statement of endorsement early July 22.

“The American people deserve a champion who will continue the progress of the Biden-Harris Administration, and that’s why I am proud to voice my full support and offer my full endorsement to Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Nominee for President.

I had lengthy conversations with both the President and the Vice President yesterday, and I offered my full support for Kamala Harris’ candidacy to both of them directly,” Moore  said.

With so many endorsements for Harris immediately following Biden’s announcement and endorsement of the former California prosecutor, the politically charged historic moment was reminiscent of former Rep Ted Kennedy’s endorsement of then-Senator Barack Obama for president in 2007. Obama went on to become president in 2008.
