As Prince George’s County goes through yet another transitional phase, voters turned out for the special election of the county executive and District 5 council member seats on March 4.

Democrat Aisha Braveboy announced that she gained her party’s nomination by near 2 to 1 margin over her nearest opponent, former County Executive Rushern L. Baker III. It’s a lead Braveboy has maintained since March 4. At-Large County Councilman Calvin Hawkins held third place as of March 7 with 16% of the vote according to the unofficial count at the Maryland State Board of Elections.

“I can’t wait to serve as your next county executive,” Braveboy said in her closing remarks to her supporters at the Metro Points Hotel in New Carrollton.

Although the Braveboy campaign enjoyed a seemingly decisive lead by the time the polls closed, the county board of elections acknowledged that mail-in ballots are still being counted. The Hawkins and Baker campaigns publicly announced that they seek a full vote count.

"While current tallies may suggest a certain outcome, it is imperative to recognize that a substantial number of votes remain uncounted,” says Baker’s Campaign Team Manager Kevin Ford Jr. “We owe it to every voter to ensure that each ballot is meticulously accounted for before drawing any conclusions. The integrity of our democratic process hinges on this commitment. We remain steadfast in our dedication to upholding the principles of fairness and accuracy in this election."

Shayla Adams-Stafford appears to have won the Democratic nominee to step into the District 5 seat vacated by Jolene Ivey, now an At-Large member of the county council.

On the Republican side, unofficial poll results suggested George E. McDermott is positioned to compete with Braveboy for the County Executive position and Fred Price Jr. will run for the council’s District 5. The race between McDermott and his nearest competitor, Jesse A. Peed, was still close at 7:30 AM on March 7.

The general election will be held June 3.

The winners for county executive and County Council will serve out the remaining two years left on the terms for those two seats. At that time, they will be required to campaign for the seats should they choose to remain in them.
