County Council Chair Todd M. Turner Issues Statement on the 25th Anniversary of the Rev Dr. Martin  Luther King Holiday

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

By Todd M. Turner

The Prince George’s County Council honors the exemplary life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as part of the 25th annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, a federal holiday observed each year on the third Monday in January. This year, 2020, marks the 25th celebration of the annual service event since Congress designed the MLK holiday the first-ever National Day of Service.

This holiday is not just an opportunity to remember. It is also a call to act.

In honor of Dr. King’s lasting legacy of service and recognizing Monday, January 20, as “a day on, not a day off,” we encourage county residents to spend the day volunteering and improving our communities – grab a paintbrush, mentor a youth, help clean a public space, deliver meals, collect food and clothing for those in need, reach out to our seniors and disabled.

There are MLK Day volunteer opportunities occurring throughout Prince George’s County.   Register to participate in free holiday events hosted by the Prince George’s County Office of Community Relations. Council Members are also hosting events across the county. Contact your council office or visit us online or on social media for more information.

On this holiday, we are reminded of Dr. King’s example of unconditional love for others. As a community, consider honoring the importance of his legacy by recommitting to serve the needs of your community throughout the year. Let’s make a difference together.
