Hoyer On Biden's Record: 'We've Added 13.5 Million Jobs'
Hoyer’s Remarks At Prince George’s Community College As POTUS Stumps In Prince George's County
The following is a direct excerpt from the speech delivered by Steny Hoyer September 14
By Steny Hoyer // Representative Of 5th Congressional District Of Maryland
Hello, Prince George’s County. Hello Maryland. Welcome to Biden Country!
I am so proud to represent this college, this community, along with my good friend Glenn Ivey of the Congress of the United States.
I am so glad to welcome our President to Prince George’s County, Maryland, I know the Governor will welcome him. I am also proud to be here with my dear, dear friends the senior Senator from Maryland Ben Cardin, and the junior Senator […] Chris Van Hollen, so Chris thank you for being here. I want to thank both of them for what they have done for Prince George’s County and our state through the years.
Doctor, good to be here with you, at this great school which started at Suitland High School. I want to thank the President for coming as I said to Prince George’s County and to Maryland.
Maryland and America have always been the great land of opportunity—the opportunity to get ahead, the opportunity to build a better life, the opportunity not just for the fortunate few, but for the people. All the people.
Last Congress, Democrats put more opportunity within reach for working families than ever before [...] We invested in America and Americans. The results speak for themselves: when President Biden was elected in November 2020, the unemployment was 6.7% today it is 3.8%.
The result of legislation sponsored by President Biden, passed by the Congress of the United States, and now law, we’ve added 13.5 million new jobs to the economy during President Biden’s two and half years. That is two and half times what any President in four years has done in history. That includes 800,000 new manufacturing jobs which is going to create even more jobs.
Factories are opening across America, with construction spending by U.S. manufacturers more than doubling in the past year, as a result of the legislation we passed in the Congress, reaching an annual rate of nearly $190 billion of private sector investment in manufacturing jobs in America — the highest that rate has ever reached. Let me repeat that — that’s the highest it has ever reached under the previous administration which was less than half of that.
Wages continue to grow faster than inflation, which has fallen to less than half of what it was a year ago, but still too high, and we are still working on bringing it down.
More Americans are working today than at any point in our history. Think of that.
[That’s not luck; that’s Bidenomics.
Americans have the grit, the ingenuity, and the determination to build up their communities and their country.
They just need the tools – the opportunity – to Make It In America.]
That’s why we passed laws to lower their health care, prescription drug, and energy costs.
It’s why we took historic action to build safer communities and to expand care for our veterans.
And it’s the reason that we made once-in-a-generation investments in infrastructure and manufacturing to create jobs, strengthen our supply chains, and give a better quality of life for our people.
The impact of these policies will only continue to grow as we implement these historic laws.
The President is going to talk about these.
I’ve been proud to help lead House Democrats in that effort as chair of the new Regional Leadership Council and in the last Congress as Majority Leader.
We’re ensuring that these transformative laws reach every American in every corner of the country – from our biggest cities to our smallest towns, and most rural areas.
No matter where they live, all Americans deserve to see how these laws are Investing in America, Investing in Americans: creating jobs, lowering costs, and strengthening the middle class.
I congratulate President Biden and his administration for advancing that mission here in Maryland and throughout the country.
Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of my children, my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren, I thank President Biden for investing in a stronger, healthier, more competitive, and more job-producing America today, tomorrow, and for generations yet to come. Now I am pleased to introduce the junior Senator Chris Van Hollen, soon to the senior Senator from the state of Maryland, Chris Van Hollen.
