Celebrating African Heritage Month In Prince George’s

“The African Community Has Enriched Our County In Countless Ways, From Business And Food To Healthcare And Beyond.”  --Blegay

By Wala Blegay

Prince George’s County Councilmember Wala Blegay (D-District 6)

Dear Residents,

I am thrilled to share that following the Governor’s announcement of September as African Heritage Month, the Prince George’s County Council has proudly presented our own proclamation to honor the contributions of the African community within our county. It was a privilege to be joined by many African leaders from our community for this significant moment.

The African community has enriched our county in countless ways, from business and food to healthcare and beyond. Prince George’s County is a better place because of the diverse and dynamic contributions of our African brothers and sisters.

As the daughter of Liberian and Nigerian immigrants, this proclamation holds deep personal meaning for me, and it was an honor to witness this moment as we continue to celebrate African Heritage Month. I look forward to the future contributions that the African community will continue to bring to our county.

Join us for the African Cultural Night Award Ceremony** on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Hampton Conference Center. This exciting event, co-hosted by Councilmember Krystal Oriadha and myself, will be filled with vibrant - cultural performances, an African fashion show, award presentations, inspiring speakers, and so much more. It will be a night to celebrate the extraordinary diversity, history, and contributions of the African community in our county. This event is intended for County Residents.

This will be a night to remember, and I encourage you to come out and experience the beauty of African culture with your friends, family, and neighbors. Let’s unite in celebrating the cultural diversity that makes Prince George’s County so special.

We look forward to seeing you on this remarkable occasion!

Please feel free to reach out to my office at or (301) 952-3426 or councildistrict6@co.pg.md.us if you have any questions or would like more information about the event.

Thank you, and I hope to celebrate with you on September 27th!
