County Executive Aisha Braveboy Responds To Questions About Former Fire Chief Tiffany Green

By County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy

BRAVEBOY

In Prince George’s County, the safety of our residents is our highest priority—and that commitment begins with the people we hire to protect and serve. Recent public discussion surrounding the status of former Fire Chief Tiffany Green has underscored the need for clarity, transparency, and unwavering standards in public safety hiring practices.

Contrary to an earlier inaccurate report suggesting suspension, Chief Green, who recently accepted a new role within the County, was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into pre-employment practices within our Fire/EMS Department. This decision was consistent with County policy, which requires that credible concerns be examined thoroughly and without bias.

Under the leadership of Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Public Safety Melvin Powell, the investigation is being conducted by another public safety agency. Early findings revealed that some recruits brought in under the previous administration entered the academy without the required background checks. That is unacceptable. These checks are not a formality—they are a vital safeguard for our residents, our employees, and the integrity of our institutions.

Given these findings, we made the responsible decision to pause the academy until the investigation is complete and all background checks are verified. This is not about politics—it is about protecting the public, maintaining trust, and ensuring that our hiring processes meet the highest standards.

I want to reassure every resident of Prince George’s County: we will not compromise when it comes to public safety. Our hiring processes will reflect the seriousness of our mission, the integrity of our leadership, and the trust our residents place in us. Public safety hiring practices will be nothing but the best—because our community deserves nothing less.
