The Shift to At-Large County Councilmember
By Wala Blegay
Dear Prince George’s County Residents,
I am writing to share an important update and to thank you for the trust you continue to place in me.
Wala Blegay
I am honored to have been unanimously appointed to serve as Prince George’s County Councilmember At-Large, a role that allows me to expand the work I have proudly done on behalf of District 6 to serve residents across our entire County.
I also want to sincerely thank the residents of District 6 for trusting me with the opportunity to serve you—it has been an honor to represent one of the strongest, most engaged, and best districts in Prince George’s County.
I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to Councilmember Calvin Hawkins, who has long been known as the People’s Champion. His legacy of service, accessibility, and people-first leadership has shaped Prince George’s County in meaningful ways. I am honored to take on the baton and remain committed to continuing that same tradition—championing the voices, needs, and priorities of our residents across every district.
Since being elected to the County Council in November 2022, I have worked every day to deliver results through a people-driven, community-focused approach. During my service as Vice Chair of the County Council during the “People’s Council,” we advanced an agenda rooted in equity, transparency, and accountability—ensuring that residents, not special interests, were at the center of decision-making.
As Chair of the Board of Health, I have focused on improving health outcomes countywide by addressing long emergency room wait times, advocating for expanded primary care access, strengthening maternal and family health outcomes, and supporting prevention strategies that treat food access as a public health issue.
As the Councilmember for District 6, I have led and supported key legislative efforts to protect residents and preserve community character, including:
HOA transparency and hearing process legislation to ensure homeowners have clear and fair avenues to be heard
Rental stabilization efforts to help protect tenants and preserve housing affordability
Zoning and land-use reforms that stopped inappropriate development, including preventing 24-hour convenience and tobacco-oriented uses and blocking the proliferation of self-storage facilities in commercial zones meant for neighborhood-serving businesses
Advocating for responsible development standards that balance economic growth with quality of life
In addition, I have supported pausing data center development until clear, enforceable standards are established—standards that address infrastructure capacity, energy use, environmental impact, and community input—so that growth occurs responsibly and in alignment with the long-term interests of Prince George’s County residents.
I have also prioritized economic development that benefits residents by advancing projects such as Downtown Largo and Westphalia, while ensuring development remains community-centered and equitable. My office has remained deeply engaged in neighborhoods across District 6, including Beechtree, advocating for smart growth, infrastructure improvements, and neighborhood protections.
Community engagement has been central to my work. My office has hosted and supported legal clinics, State of the Power–style community forums, small business engagement and procurement events, and multiple town halls focused on development projects, public safety, healthcare access, and quality-of-life issues.
As Councilmember At-Large, I am committed to bringing this same level of advocacy, accessibility, and results-driven leadership to residents across all nine council districts.
Looking ahead, my office will be launching Town Hall 2026, a series of town halls across Prince George’s County designed to meet residents where they are and ensure that community voices continue to guide our work. I invite you to sign up using the link below to stay informed about upcoming town halls in your area.
If you live outside of District 6, I also encourage you to complete our community survey so I can better understand the issues that matter most to you and the topics you would like addressed in future forums.
I remain deeply committed to continuing to be a champion for the people—just as I have been honored to do in District 6—and to serving Prince George’s County with integrity, transparency, and purpose.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
With gratitude and resolve,
Wala Blegay, Esq.
Prince George’s County Councilmember At-Large
Ready to Serve
