Poet Laureate’s Ongoing Voices Of Summer Series Goes To Upper Marlboro Next
Words and messages and wisdom come together in a number of ways when poets weave them.
Prince George’s County Poet Laureate Sistah Joy and Featured Poet Hiram Larew will weave words and messages through their poetry --- and encourage the region’s community of poetically gifted artists to join the platform.
The two artists will lead the next occasion of the Voices Of Summer Series at the Upper Marlboro Library June 15 starting at 1 p.m. (FREE).
J. Joy “Sistah Joy” Matthews is the county’s first poet laureate and leads the Office of the Poet Laureate in Largo.
Agricultural scientist Dr. Larew is recipient off the 2016 OSU Alumni Fellow award and is an accomplished and decorated poet.
Other talents include Youth Poetry Ambassador Nala Washington, Visual Artist Jacqueline Pope, Vocalist Karen Wiggs-Wilbank and Musician Doc Powell (Djembe drumming).
Poets within the audience will be invited to recite/perform work of their own during Open Mic. A Meet and Greet The Artists reception will follow.
Sponsors of the event include The Maryland State Arts Council, The Prince George’s Arts & Humanities Council and the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System.
