A Sweet Deal
Hyattsville-Based Bakery Partners with Walmart on Sweet Potato Cake
Did someone say sweet potato cake?
Known for its legendary taste, the Hyattsville-based company, DC Sweet Potato Cake, owned by April Richardson just won a sweet deal – a partnership with Walmart to sell their rich and moist sweet potato cake in 250 stores, with plans for further growth.
DC Sweet Potato Cake was one of the over 500 companies invited to participate in the event which provides businesses from across the nation the opportunity to present their Made in the USA products to Walmart. The heavenly cake from the woman and minority-owned commercial bakery won the contract.
April Richardson came on board and turned around the failing Delectable Bakery owned by avid baker Laurine Helen Lowery, who uses her age-old family recipe to make the rich, moist cake of fresh sweet potatoes. In under one year, Richardson managed to attract national clients and attention. Delectable Bakery became DC Sweet Potato Cake and April took over the helm, becoming owner and president, and turning the bakery into a commercial one. The bakery’s sweet potato cake and other products are sold at Wegmans, Starbucks, Nordstrom, QVC, Safeway, and soon, at Walmart.
