Chris V. Rey: Leading From The Heart Of Brandywine

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Welcomes Brandywine Resident Chris Rey as 36th International President

With strong North Carolina roots, Chris V. Rey, J.D., has made Brandywine, MD his home as he prepares for his big job with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Last month, the former Spring Lake North Carolina Mayor and native of St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Rey was elected the 36th International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., making him the first member in the organization's 107-year history to rise to the rank of International President. His appointment was confirmed at the 2021 International Conclave in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on August 11.

As an organization with a solid foundation in service, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by three African American male students on the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. Rey joined Phi Beta Sigma in 1996 on the campus of East Carolina University.  As a member, he has served at every level of the fraternity. Most recently, as International First Vice President. Under his leadership, the fraternity broke membership growth records.

Rey is leading an organization that has had a big impact on communities globally. Throughout the pandemic, the Fraternity has continued to make its impact felt in communities across the world by collaborating with organizations that support its mission. Sigma donated $500,000 to community partners, including raising more than $300,000 for the March of Dimes; $200,000 to Howard University, $50,000 to the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union; $25,000 to the NAACP; $25,000 to the National Action Network; $25,000 to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund; $25,000 to the United Negro College Fund; and $20,000 to Miss Ruby’s Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving school readiness for children in Georgetown, SC.

Rey’s is embarking on a journey of possibilities. “The next chapter will be our best yet," he said. "We will raise our engagement level to address poverty, access to the ballot box, the wealth gap, and health disparities for black and brown men.”

Rey resides in Brandywine with his family.
