County Council At-Large Member Mel Franklin: His Platform, Perspective and Priorities

Running on a platform of equity and opportunity, Prince George’s County Council At-Large Councilman Mel Franklin is running for re-election and has presented a ten point agenda, better known as the ‘2022 Empower Prince George’s Agenda.’ The agenda, created by Councilman Franklin and his campaign office, has been shared with the community and outlines his reasons for seeking his seat again, as voters head to the polls on July 19.

As stated on his website, Councilman Franklin describes himself as an experienced leader and details his priorities as an elected official. Focusing on jobs, generational wealth, schools, safety, and economic growth, Franklin continues to put the needs of residents first, something he’s been doing since he was first elected into office in 2010.

Councilman Franklin also states on the site that he has not stopped fighting to improve the quality of life for every community. As he now stands for re-election as County Council Member At-Large with his fellow at-large colleague Council Member Calvin Hawkins, Councilman Franklin introduces the ‘2022 Empower Prince George’s Agenda,’ a more formal outline of how he will make things better for residents in the county.

As an At-Large member, Councilman Franklin would have the opportunity to view county issues as a whole, not just in his district. With that said, some new proposed projects outlined in the agenda will be transformative. “It's an evolution of areas I have worked on for some time.  These ideas have sprung on from previous related policies,” he said.

Other ideas include proposed programs for making Prince George’s County the small business and start-up capital of the region and expanding access to affordable health care, and reinvesting in public transit, roads.

“My focus is creating a comprehensive agenda that I can share with my colleagues, for both current and future. It wasn't just to come up with ideas that I am in favor of, but measurable areas with some attainable goals,” Councilman Franklin said.

The 2022 Empower Prince George’s Agenda’s areas:

●       Education and Youth Empowerment

●       Equity and Inclusion Agenda for Local Business Community

●       Infrastructure Investment

●       Working Families’ Economic Assistance
