Check Out These 2019 Predictions for The County and The Nation

Written and Compiled By PGS Media and M.H. Jim Estepp, President & CEO Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable

 1.   County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and the newly elected County Council of eleven members, will do a very good job their first year out and will assimilate well over the course of the next several months.  The result will be the continuation of excellent leadership at the local level and raising the standard of living among our residents.

  2.  The county’s Public Safety Team: Police, Fire/EMS, Sheriff, Corrections and Homeland Security will continue to make significant progress on reducing and stabilizing crimes in our county.  In addition, they will take advantage of technological improvements, putting them to work for a safer county

 3.  The nation’s economy will continue to do well.  Housing will begin to move forward, along with auto sales and the number of jobs created in this county will increase.  Overall the county’s revenue will improve as a result.

 4.  The county’s Regional Medical Center, University of Maryland Capital Region Health, will open on time and begin providing outstanding medical services to our county.  In the process, good working relationships will be established with the other two hospitals in the county to forge a more coordinated, patient-centered, health care system.

 5.  The Joint Base Andrews Air Show in May will be one of the best in the history of the event.  The combination of the Navy’s Blue Angels and the Air Force’s Thunderbirds appearing in the same show, bodes well for one of the most celebrated events in the county and region.

6. There will be a greater focus on youth and education in this year. In light of challenges to the public school system over the past two years, a change in leadership and a fully funded budget, expect more focus on success programs, teacher support and overall school safety.

7. Arts and culture communities will make a greater impact on county life in 2019. New Poet Laureate Sistah Joy, the first in county history, joins a reinvigorated Prince George’s Arts & Humanities Council in spearheading the value of the arts in quality of life, the economic power of the arts as a potential revenue stream for the county and the undertapped magnetism the arts hold for making Prince George’s more of a global destination.

8. The roller coaster ride on Capital Hill is likely to continue - having domino-like impact on the county and region. County leaders and residents will continue to bind together and develop creative responses to the tumultuous events within Washington politics.

9. A surge in young talent across disciplines: sports, science and technology, performing arts and leadership as a result of growing trend of new voices that feel compelled and inspired to take control and be heard. A cross section of opportunity, the example of other new, young leaders and frustration with existing structures will create a path for fresh faces of leaders in the county and region.
