Halloween Safety Tips

The time has arrived, as it always does this time of year when the goblins, ghosts, gremlins and ghouls come out to play.

But behind those scary masks and costumes are little mini-me(s) going from door to door; neighborhood to neighborhood shouting “trick or treat” in hopes of treats like apples, juices or candies. Weather prevailing, this October 31 the streets will be transformed into spooky porches with blinking yellow or orange lights hiding ghosts, skeletons, giant spider webs and all manner of creepy things.

But with the increase of young children out at night comes the need to extra safety precautions.

Safe Kids has created a list of Halloween safety tips to help reduce the risk of accidents and injuries which help parents and children have a spooky but safe Halloween adventure. Below are listed a few of these tips.

1.    Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.

2.      Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

3.      Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks. Using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right, and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.

4.      When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children’s vision.

6.      Put electronic devices away, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street

7.      Drivers: get rid of any distractions—–like phones—and concentrate on the road and surroundings.

8.      Drivers: turn headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
