Community; Stakeholders Search For New Public Schools CEO

There’s still time for voices to be heard in selecting a new, permanent Prince George’s County Public Schools Chief Executive Officer.

On May 13, County Executive Angela Alsobrooks held a public hearing (see above) regarding the selection of the permanent Schools CEO. Following the departure of Dr. Kevin Maxwell, Dr. Monica Goldson took the reins as the interim CEO but her term ends June 30.

Alsobrooks held the public hearing affirming a promise she made to county residents, “…as promised, I told you before we engage in this selection process I would come to this community and make sure that you had an opportunity to be heard.”

In her opening statement, the County Executive emphasized “There is nothing more important than the future of our children. Everything that we do on a daily basis is to bring the best possible future for our children…”

With a packed parking lot at Charles H. Flowers HIgh School and over 80 residents signed up to testify on what they needed in the new permanent CEO, Alsobrooks went through the selection process. She introduced the three-member selection committee and two representatives from the search firm, Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, (HYA), who would be conducting the nationwide search and sending 6 to 7 names to the selection committee for vetting. After interviewing (as many as six to seven) candidates, three would be chosen by the selection committee and sent forward to the County Executive who would interview each and send her recommendation to the Board of Education. (For more information on vetting process, see public hearing video).

Most importantly, the hearing focused on involvement and input from the community on what characteristics, traits and qualities they wanted most in the new CEO. For those who could not attend the public hearing but who wanted to include their ideas and opinions; an online survey was put in place and is still available until May 30 to allow everyone who wants to be involved, the chance to do so.

Alsobrooks added: “As a reminder, we are doing this search because we are required to by law.  However, we want this process to be open and transparent to the public, which is why we have held a public hearing and are asking everyone to complete this survey.  Your input is a valuable part of this process, and your comments and feedback will be sent directly to the search firm to consider.  We hope to finish this entire process by June 30th and name our permanent CEO.”
