An Olympic ‘Break’through!
Has The Time Come To Bust A Move At The Olympic Games?
From the Bronx to the big stage, break dancing might be in the 2024 Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted in favor of a proposal that could bring breakdancing to the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet said he was delighted with the IOC’s vote to include breakdancing, skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games program. Bringing in these new sports offers diversity and an added excitement watching the masters of these fields show off their skills as they compete for the gold.
Breakdancing, joined by climbing/bouldering emerged as events a year ago at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, but neither of the sports made it to the big stage. But earlier this year the Paris 2024 organizing committee proposed that breakdancing along with skateboarding, climbing/bouldering and surfing, be added to the events program.
Next year at the Tokyo Olympics, climbing, skateboarding and surfing competitions make their debuts, but there is not guarantee they will be a part of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
There is still one more step to go before a decision will be made on these new competitive events, the games will still need more vetting before they're officially added to the Paris roster but the signs look good. The final vote is scheduled for December 2020. If the vote passes, then what began as a dance phenom with hip hop in the Bronx, New York in the mid-1970s will have made urban dance history.
