Prince George’s 2021 - The Reignition Begins

By Kia Lisby

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused much inconvenience, stress, and unnecessary burdens on many people. Businesses have suffered beyond salvation, spending habits have altered, and the economy has been through more ups and downs than an amusement park roller coaster throughout these nearly 8 months, including some businesses in Prince George’s County.

“Prince George’s County has been the economic engine of our state, creating more jobs in the last 5 years than any other jurisdiction. However, when this pandemic hit in March, that growth was erased in a matter of weeks” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, during the Experience Prince George’s virtual marketing outlook meeting.

Experience Prince George’s is the destination marketing organization for Prince George’s County, actively marketing and promoting the county (regionally and nationally) as a top multipurpose destination in the Mid-Atlantic area. They advocate for resources in the hospitality industry along with providing beneficial resources for residents, local businesses, and travelers to resort to during the pandemic.

Alsobrooks explained that the purpose and the work of the tourism sector is important for the county “to reignite our economy and position us to emerge from this pandemic stronger than we’ve ever been before.”

To help achieve this goal, Experience Prince George’s recently launched a new tourism campaign geared towards visitors from New York to Virginia called “Social Distance Here.”

The campaign encourages residents and travelers to stay active and engage in the outdoor activities and amenities that the county offers, with more to come in 2021.

If you are looking for something to do or just simply want to get out of the house for some socially distanced human interaction, there are many activities in Prince George’s County for family and friends of all ages to engage in.

Some of the many outdoor amenities the county offers its residents and visitors include golfing, hiking, parks, wineries and vineyards, Tanger Outlets, and National Harbor, to name a few.

With the hospitality industry struggling during the pandemic, the Maryland Office of Tourism has provided resources for now and moving forward into the coming year(s), to help businesses market themselves, and promote their products and services.

Marketing and promoting local businesses allows residents and travelers alike to better support them and their communities. This also allows for continued promotion for the expansion of upscale retail that will attract global business to the area.

When consumers buy, businesses grow, and the economy thrives. Let us do our part as a community and support our local businesses the best way we can.
