The Game Of Names
Popular Baby Names In 2020
Naming your child, at first blush, seems to be an easy thing to do. There are a host of names that one could pull out of a hat. But the truth of it is, naming your child is a very important, and very difficult task. There is much to be taken into consideration.
First, and most importantly, is it a boy or is it a girl? Once that question is answered, the difficult task begins- which parent will the child be named after or how many of the parents/in-law’s names will be included. Next: will the child be given a name that sounds like money (Madison, Morgan, Harcourt, or Anderson)? Or will the child be given a strong, salt-of-the-earth name (Jack, Leroy, Paul, Stephen, Elizabeth, Brenda, Diane, Amy).
Some parents and grandparents think a name will make or break a child.
There are list after list of possible names for babies. How can one choose?
In the 1960’s, according to the Social Security Administration, baby names were simple, easy to remember; for example-Karen, Linda, Lisa, Mary, Donna, Tammy, Julie, Debra and for the boys-Michael, David, John, James, Mark, Thomas, Richard.
In the 1970’s, Swahili names became more popular with black families. These families were a part of the generation of black people who were getting away from slave names but reconnecting with their roots and African origins by giving their kids Afrocentric names such as Aisha, Ashante, Chriki, Aleesha, Kenya, Akim, Akil, and Jamal.
The Social Security Administration has kept a list of baby names from as far back as the 1880s. And they have just released their list for 2020 of the ten most popular names for boys and girls. Who knows, there may be a name on this list for your little tot.
