Hoyer, Cardin, Vah Hollen Join Other Elected Leaders In Denouncing Post Office Slow Down

Congressman Steny Hoyer is the latest to join a growing list of elected officials raising their voices together against recent executive-level changes at the United States Postal Service (USPS) that are slowing mail service in Maryland and across the nation.

Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. Young, Maryland State Senate President Bill Ferguson, Congressman Kweisi Mfume, and others held a press conference Aug. 17 to condemn the slowing of the mail service less than three months ahead of a national election.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) will hold a press conference with National Capital Region Democrats outside the United States Postal Service headquarters in Washington, DC Aug. 18 to express their support for the role the USPS plays in communities and for the hardworking men and women of the USPS.

In recent weeks, President Trump’s appointee to lead the USPS, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, has implemented sudden changes that have slowed down mail delivery, such as the consolidation of routes, the ending of overtime pay for letter carriers, and the removal of critical mail-sorting machines.  All of these changes have led to delays in the delivery of mail, raising serious concerns about the impact on seniors, veterans, and rural communities to get critical deliveries of items like prescription medication, as well as the ability of voters to obtain ballots by mail and return them in time to be counted by boards of election.

The House will return to session on Aug. 22 to consider legislation to protect the USPS from political interference and ensure that it has the funding and support required to prevent delays and serve the American people during this pandemic.
