Proposed Station Name Change
County Officials Want to Rename ‘Largo Town Center Station,’ Public Can Vote
It was just a year ago that Prince George's County officials asked Metro to approve changing the name of ‘Prince George's Plaza Station’ to ‘Hyattsville Crossing.’ They’re still waiting for the Metro Board of Directors to approve that request.
County officials are returning back to Metro with a formal request to rename the ‘Largo Town Center Metro Station.’ If approved, the county would be responsible for the financial cost associated with changing a station’s name from system maps, digital signs, websites, the SmarTrip app and other materials. When the county submitted the formal request, these were the proposed name changes: ‘Largo,’ ‘Downtown Largo,’ and ‘Downtown PGC.”
Under Metro’s station naming policy, adopted in 2012, in addition to making the jurisdiction responsible for funding the full cost of the change across the 91-station Metrorail system, the policy also sets forth the following guidelines for any new station name:
Names should identify the station locations by geographic features such as landmarks or centers of activity.
Names should be distinctive and evoke imagery in the mind of the patron.
Names should be no longer than 19 characters, except for transfer station names, which should be no longer than 13 characters.
Metro has provided a survey for the public to give feedback online for the name change: wmata.com/survey.
