Making Mental Health A Priority
County Executive Angela Alsobrooks Directs $20 Million Prince George’s County’s Partnership with Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center to Build New Behavioral Health Facility
The following is excerpted from the County Executive’s April 20 edition of Community Connections
Residents suffering from mental health or addiction issues will be able to get the professional help they need, within the county.
I wanted to take a moment to celebrate our breaking ground on a new behavioral health facility for Prince George’s County. For far too long, Prince George’s County has been a behavioral healthcare desert, and it is wrong to treat those suffering from mental health or addiction issues in jail. That’s why last summer, I drafted enabling legislation to reallocate $20 million from a public safety training facility to build a behavioral health facility. I sent that enabling legislation to the County Council and they reviewed and approved the measure to be placed on the ballot and voters agreed and passed the legislation in November 2020.
With the partnership of Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center (LHDCMC), we are moving forward with building this new facility to provide mental health and addiction care services to our residents. This will ensure residents who need these services are able to get the professional help they need right here in Prince George’s County, without having to interact with our criminal justice system.
