No Excuse For Dating Abuse
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Everyone deserves a healthy relationship and The Department of Family Services, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and the Office of the State’s Attorney is helping by taking teen dating violence very seriously.
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and also marks the 9th Annual No Excuse for Dating Abuse Teen Summit. To shed some light on the issue of dating abuse, several county agencies held its teem summit event virtually on February 10. Supported by WKYS 95.5 FM, the event included entertainment and a panel discussion.
According to breakthecycle.org, one in three teenagers reports knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked, or physically hurt by their partner. Teen dating violence is a violation that can affect a young person's safety, development, and sense of comfort. Perpetrated by a current or past partner, dating violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, and can occur in person or through electronic communication and social media. Violent dating relationships can lead to depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol use, and thoughts of suicide. Victims may continue to experience detrimental effects throughout their lives.
During National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, we recognize the urgency needed in addressing this problem and recommit to preventing it by educating our youth about its dangers and consequences and reaffirm the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse.
For the last nine years, the Teen Dating Violence Summit has brought valuable information and resources to teenagers in Prince George’s County.
