There Are Many Roads To Aid In Making King’s Dream A Reality
The Martin Luther King Holiday, scheduled to be recognized, Monday Jan 20, is being honored in a number of ways. Here are a few:
*First Baptist Church of Glenarden is hosting its annual Day Of Service Jan 18. Volunteers are encouraged to participate to give back to the communities in the area.
*County Councilmember Wala Blegay is partnering with UM Regional Medical Center in calling for MLK Day donations to aid in the fight against Sickle Cell.
“As we prepare for our MLK Day of Service Activity this Monday, January 20, 2025, we have not yet received enough donations to adequately support our efforts to bring comfort and relief to sickle cell patients in our community,” Blegay said in a statement.
“We are asking for your help to ensure this event is a success and that we can make a meaningful impact for sickle cell warriors at Children’s National and UM Capital Region hospitals.”
How You Can Help:
Please donate toiletries (such as travel-size hygiene products) and distraction items (like small puzzles or activity books) to provide comfort to hospitalized patients. Any donation, big or small, makes a difference. Residents can drop off donations at the event on Monday or bring them to UM Capital Region Health during the event hours: Monday Jan 20 10 AM to 1 PM at UM Capitol Region Health.
*Watch: MLK Shabbat: Visions of Freedom and Justice. This is a powerful service to be held Jan 17 (tonight) at Sixth and I Streets in the District. (see calendar).
* Watch: "Speak the Dream: MLK Day Poetry Slam". This creative competition gives voice to the late civil rights leader’s work, goals and ideas in present day situations and tones. “This special MLK Day Poetry Slam to be held Jan. 17 at Busboys and Poets in WDC brings together amateur and professional poets to share their stories and perspectives in a competitive and inspiring showcase.” The audience will determine the winner of the $100 prize.
