Station Makes Record-Breaking Annual Toy Drive At Iverson Mall

The holidays arrived early—and loudly—in the DMV as WHUR-FM wrapped up its 2025 Season of Giving with a joyful, record-breaking finale that proved once again the extraordinary power of community. On a crisp December Saturday, the 23rd Annual WHUR Children’s Toy Drive transformed the Shops at Iverson into a hub of generosity, laughter, and holiday magic, as more than 2,000 new toys and gifts were collected in just four spirited hours.

Broadcasting live from the scene, WHUR on-air personality Coka Lani kept the energy high and the smiles wide, urging listeners to dig deep into the spirit of the season. And they did—parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends streamed in with new, unwrapped toys destined for children across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Powered by community champions Macy’s Downtown Metro Center and FedEx, the toy drive marked not just the end of an event, but the culmination of a year-long mission rooted in compassion and service.

“For 23 years, our listeners, partners, and staff have come together to ensure children feel seen, valued, and loved during the holidays,” said Sean Plater, General Manager of WHUR-FM. “This toy drive is more than gifts—it’s hope, joy, and reassurance for families who need it most.”

That sense of hope will soon be unwrapped in living rooms and community centers across the region. Among the beneficiaries is the GAP Community Child Development Center, which supports families through early education and social services. CEO Travis Harmon shared that the toys represent more than fun—they offer comfort, stability, and a reminder that the community cares. “These toys will bring smiles and a sense of normalcy to children who truly need it,” he said.

The toy drive was the grand finale of WHUR’s ambitious 2025 Season of Giving, a year defined by action and impact. Over the past months, the station helped distribute thousands of bookbags and school supplies, donated hundreds of coats and hats to children braving cold winter days, raised $60,000 to put Thanksgiving meals on family tables, and generated $50,000 to support communities in Jamaica impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

Donations from the toy drive will reach trusted organizations including Good Projects, Dunbar Alexandria Olympic Boys and Girls Club, Prince George’s County Family Justice Center, Mission of Love Charities, United Communities Against Poverty, and Woodland Springs—ensuring that generosity touches many corners of the region.

As the final toy was counted and the last broadcast signed off, one message rang clear: WHUR remains a trusted voice and a true community partner, proving that when people come together, the holidays shine a little brighter—and the impact lasts well beyond the season.
