As part of a wave of efforts to address job losses across the region, a major jobs fair took place April 17 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. The event drew hundreds of job seekers from across the county. The event was co-hosted by County Council Member Jolene Ivey, Congressman Glenn Ivey, and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC). Prince George’s County Parks and Recreation Director Bill Tyler was on hand to ensure the event’s success and to inspire job seekers [listen to audio below].

The fair offered more than 500 job opportunities across a variety of sectors, including government, education, public safety, healthcare, and skilled trades. Attendees had the chance to meet with recruiters, submit applications on-site, and take advantage of resume reviews and career counseling services.

Organizers said the event was designed to support residents who have been affected by recent economic shifts and to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers in the region.

“This is about making sure our community members have access to meaningful employment opportunities,” said Jolene Ivey. “We’re working together to help people get back on their feet and connect with employers who are actively hiring.”

Congressman Glenn Ivey emphasized the importance of collaboration among local leaders and agencies to stimulate job growth. “Today was about providing real options and a path forward for people who are ready to work,” he said.

The MNCPPC played a key role in organizing logistics for the fair and ensuring accessibility for all attendees. The Show Place Arena’s spacious venue allowed for a safe and organized event environment, accommodating dozens of employers and hundreds of applicants.

Organizers encouraged participants to continue following up with the contacts made during the fair and to stay engaged with local employment initiatives.
