Sphere Project Gets Another Step Toward Opening Day At National Harbor

A major step forward in transforming Prince George’s County’s economic landscape unfolded in Annapolis this week, as County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy joined Governor Wes Moore for the signing of landmark legislation advancing the highly anticipated Sphere project at National Harbor.

The newly enacted HB1247—focused on Tax Increment Financing (TIF) within Extraordinary Development Districts—clears a critical pathway for the construction of Sphere National Harbor, a next-generation entertainment venue poised to redefine the region’s tourism and revenue potential. The legislation allows bond proceeds to fund the project itself, rather than just infrastructure, accelerating momentum on what officials describe as one of the county’s most transformative economic investments.

Braveboy hailed the measure as a generational win, emphasizing both the competitive effort required to secure the project and its long-term fiscal promise. Once operational, Sphere National Harbor is projected to generate approximately $63 million annually in tax revenue—outpacing the combined seasonal contributions of major attractions like the Washington Commanders and Six Flags.

The project’s economic scale mirrors the success of its predecessor in Las Vegas, where the original Sphere has rapidly emerged as a global entertainment powerhouse. That venue has driven hundreds of millions in annual revenue through immersive concerts, cutting-edge digital productions, and high-demand tourism experiences—setting a strong benchmark for Maryland’s iteration.

At 6,000 seats, the National Harbor Sphere is expected to draw roughly 2 million visitors annually, positioning the county as a premier destination along the East Coast. According to projections by Ernst & Young, the development will deliver $1.6 billion in economic impact during construction and an estimated $1.3 billion in recurring annual impact once fully operational.

Beyond revenue, leaders point to the project’s broader implications: job creation, hospitality growth, and a reimagined skyline along the Potomac River. As Braveboy noted, the focus now shifts from legislative victory to execution—turning a bold vision into a tangible economic engine that could shape Prince George’s County for decades to come.
