This classic action buddy film is one of the most famous in Iran, but until it was restored in 2021 (to include its once-censored controversial ending), it was virtually unseen outside the country. Directed by Masoud Kimiai, whose macho style has drawn comparisons to Sam Peckinpah and Sam Fuller, and starring the famed method actor Behrouz Vossoughi, it tells the story of a former boxer turned heroin addict who reunites with an old friend. The pair become gripped by revolutionary fervor while seeking revenge on the men who ruined the ex-boxer’s life. The film is also famous for having been on screen during the 1978 burning of Cinema Rex, the subject of Shahram Mokri’s Careless Crime, which was shown in last year’s festival. (Dir.: Massoud Kimiai, Iran, 1974, 126 min., Persian with English subtitles)
