The winner of no less than three prizes at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, including the prestigious Orizzonti Award for best film, Ahmad Bahrami’s second feature is set in a remote factory that produces bricks in the traditional way: using human labor. Many families of different ethnicities work there, and the boss seems to hold the key to solving their problems. Forty-year-old Lotfollah (Ali Bagheri, winner of the Best Actor Award in the Young Cinema section of the 2021 Hong Kong International Film Festival), who was born on-site, is the factory supervisor and acts as go-between for the workers and the boss. One day, the boss has Lotfollah gather all the workers in front of his office to announce the shutdown of the factory. All that matters now to Lotfollah is to keep the woman he has long been in love with unharmed. (Dir.: Ahmad Bahrami, Iran, 2020, 102 min., black & white, Persian with English subtitles)
