The Overdue Recognition Art Gallery, the first fine art gallery located in Bowie Maryland, opens April 7 for the first time since 2014.

The opening exhibit will highlight the works of 25 artists including Anthony Armstrong whose colorful cubism art depicts images from the past and present; Acclaimed artist William Oliver who finds desire in capturing the landscapes and peoples of the deep South; John Holyfield who’s main themes are family, spirituality and culture; And many more.

The gallery closed in 2014 due to challenges brought on by the recession.

The new location will be in Bowie Town Center, 15402 Emerald Way in Bowie, Maryland. The new  3,000-square-foot art gallery space will house over 200 works, in addition to a custom framing design center.

Says Overdue Recognition Curator Jacqueline Thompson: “It’s our hope that the gallery will serve the community as a catalyst for creative activity, were hoping to inspire and create pride through African American Art. Our ambition for the future includes being able to document African American art, publish work and to become a center for art philanthropy.”

Thompson is the curator and manager at Overdue Recognition and a Bowie resident.

“Since closing in 2014, we have continued to establish relationships with artists and now the gallery will carry more sculptures and décor items. We also have incorporated African American books into the space, with the expectation to host book signings and local events,” Thompson says of the future of the gallery.

Thompson, an art curator and native Washingtonian, started her entrepreneurial endeavors as a private dealer, where she was actively involved in supporting and promoting those artist whose work she believes in. She reports that those artist' works steadily appreciated in value. After surveying the gallery scene for African American art in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area, She opened Overdue Recognition Art Gallery in Bowie, Maryland.

Overdue recognition originally established in 2004. It represents over 75 renowned and emerging African artists. It specialized in everything from originals to reproductions including, serigraphs, giclees, limited and open edition lithographs. For years, the gallery provided a venue for African American Artists to showcase their work. The gallery fulfills its educational goals through lectures, workshops, intimate gallery talks and exhibitions with the artist in attendance.

The grand opening will be a day full of music, hors d’oeuvres and numerous art selections.
