New Partnership and Voucher Program May Bring Equity And Inclusion To The Creative Arts Table

Young artists may soon have a new avenue to success in the creative world.

On September 23, Prince George’s Community College introduced a new funding program, created in partnership with the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council (PGCAHC) and the Prince George’s Community College Foundation (PGCCF).

The program will enhance equity and inclusion by offering affordable options for performances at the Prince George’s Community College’s Center for Performing Arts. Traditionally, artists and smaller arts and cultural organizations have found it difficult to afford the excessive rental costs associated with rehearsal space and performance productions in high caliber facilities.

“PGAHC is thrilled to partner with Prince George’s Community College and the Center for Performing Arts to bring this new voucher program to Prince George’s small performing arts organizations, businesses and artists. The voucher program will offer access to an affordable high-quality performing arts space, which aligns with our mission of promoting excellence and arts opportunities for citizens of Prince George’s County and beyond,” said Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council Executive Director and Chief Curator Rhonda Dallas.

The new program will provide vouchers for up to 50% of total costs toward rental services. The maximum award amount is $3,000 for eligible organizations. An individual artist, arts organization, or business whose primary mission is focused on providing arts, cultural activities or services and an operating budget of $300,000 or less are eligible to apply. Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) artists and BIPOC owned or led organizations that serve those communities are strongly encouraged to apply. Beginning October 1, interested organizations and artists must apply online.

“The Center for Performing Arts voucher program is a direct response to feedback we received from smaller arts organizations and independent artists in Prince George’s County. We wanted to address the fact that limited resources can be a barrier to the use of our facility,” said Center for Performing Arts Senior Manager Andre Mazelin. “We hope that this subsidy will help our community partners and we look forward to the launch of this initiative,” he added.
