Take What You Need, Give What You Can
Davies Unitarian Commissions Mural from Local Artist

If you think children brighten your day, consider what they can do when you add a few gallons of paint --- especially when it’s a wall they’re supposed to paint on.
The Davies Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Camp Springs recently commissioned local artist Luther Wright to create a mural that would brighten the church grounds. With guidance from congregational leaders, Wright designed a work that incorporates the church logo and reflects the community’s hopeful, forward-looking spirit.
A member of the Artbae collective, Wright made sure to include the congregation’s children in his process, working alongside them to turn the mural into a giant paint-by-number project. The result was a festive and productive weekend for congregants of all ages. As one participant said, “Every time I come to church, I’ll know that bit of yellow is there because of me.”
Adjacent to the mural is another Davies addition, a Little Free Pantry. The cupboard will be kept stocked with canned, nonperishable goods that can be accessed 24 hours a day by those in need. This modest Pantry is part of the church’s larger focus on hunger relief. The congregation also provides donations of money and food to the Oxon Hill Food Pantry, where congregants volunteer their time.
