Akwasidae Festival Brings Ghanaian Royal Tradition to Prince George’s County

Prince George’s County will become a vibrant crossroads of culture, heritage and royal tradition when the Akwasidae Festival USA 2026 arrives at Bowie State University on Sunday, August 30.

Hosted at Bulldog Stadium from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the festival will welcome residents, community leaders and visitors from across the region—and around the world—for a colorful celebration of the Asante people of Ghana.

County Executive Braveboy

County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy will join Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Asante people, for an observance rooted in ancestral reverence, cultural pride and community unity. The king’s presence is expected to give the Prince George’s County celebration a rare sense of history and ceremonial importance.

Traditionally observed by the Asante people, Akwasidae honors ancestors and recognizes the enduring bonds connecting generations. The festival also serves as a time to celebrate leadership, identity and the customs that have helped preserve Asante heritage through the centuries.

For Prince George’s County—home to residents representing cultures from throughout Africa and the African diaspora—the event offers an opportunity to experience one of Ghana’s most meaningful traditions without leaving the county. The Akwasidae Festival USA 2026 will take place at Bowie State University’s Bulldog Stadium, 14000 Jericho Park Road in Bowie. The community is invited to attend the six-hour celebration and share in a powerful expression of African culture, ancestral remembrance, and global fellowship
