Alsobrooks Attends Groundbreaking For The New Springhill Lake Elementary School

GREENBELT, MD –  Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) joined Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) and Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy to break ground on the new 103,000-square-foot Springhill Lake Elementary School, which will accommodate up to 850 prekindergarten through 5th grade students. The modern facility will feature 43 general education classrooms and 6 specialized Criterion-Referenced Instruction (CRI) classrooms designed to support students with special needs. Built to meet at least Silver certification standards under LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), the school will incorporate sustainable design and energy-efficient systems, including a high-performance building envelope and advanced HVAC and lighting systems.

Sen. Alsobrooks listens to other speakers at the groundbreaking.

When she served as County Executive of Prince George’s County, Senator Alsobrooks worked with former PGCPS CEO Dr. Monica Goldson to create a Public Private Partnership (P3) school construction model that they worked to pass through the Maryland General Assembly

“This was a bold move,” said Sen. Alsobrooks of the decision to adopt the accelerated schools development project when she was County Executive. “[It was] an innovative public-private model that had never before been done at this level for any school system. I am so proud of this work and know we need to continue working together, in innovative ways, to deliver for our children. This is a model that worked and should be used across the nation.”

Under the continued guidance and leadership of the Progressive Education Partners (PEP), county students will see a total of 14 new P3 schools in 6 years – 18 schools in all, including traditional school construction.
