Hospital Center Gets A Rating from Leapfrog Group for Third Consecutive Year

For residents of southern Prince George's County, the difference between a routine hospital visit and a life-threatening emergency can often come down to one critical factor: patient safety. That is why the latest recognition earned by Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center is drawing attention across the county’s healthcare community.

The hospital has once again received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Spring 2026, marking the third consecutive grading cycle in which the facility earned the organization’s highest distinction. According to the announcement, Fort Washington Medical Center remains the only hospital in Prince George’s County to receive the coveted “A” safety designation.

Hospital leaders say the recognition reflects a long-term commitment to patient-centered care and preventing medical harm.

“Being a trusted source of high-quality care for our community is more than a promise—it’s a responsibility we take seriously,” said Daffodil Baez, president of the medical center. “Earning an ‘A’ safety grade underscores our continued commitment to exceptional patient care, compassion and forward-thinking practices.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is one of the nation’s most closely watched healthcare safety evaluations. Founded in 2000 by large employers and healthcare purchasers seeking better hospital accountability, The Leapfrog Group was created to push hospitals nationwide toward higher standards of care and transparency.

Twice each year, the organization evaluates hospitals throughout the United States on their ability to prevent medical errors, infections, injuries and avoidable patient harm. The grading system became especially influential as studies revealed that preventable medical mistakes contribute to hundreds of deaths nationally each day.

For Prince George’s County residents, the distinction carries particular importance. County healthcare advocates have long emphasized the need for high-performing medical institutions in a jurisdiction with a growing population and significant healthcare demands. Having a nationally recognized hospital within the county means residents can access award-winning emergency and inpatient care closer to home rather than traveling into Washington, D.C., or neighboring counties for treatment.

Part of the Adventist HealthCare system since 2019, the Fort Washington facility operates one of the only emergency rooms serving its immediate community and employs approximately 400 healthcare professionals. The hospital provides medical and surgical care, intensive care services, rehabilitation, radiology, gastrointestinal care and numerous outpatient specialties.

Healthcare experts say consistent recognition of this kind can also help attract top physicians, nurses and specialists to Prince George’s County, strengthening healthcare access and improving long-term public health outcomes for residents throughout the region.
