The annual Bulldog Golf Classic isn’t new at Bowie State University but it was a first for new BSU President Dr. Aminta Breaux.

“It feels great,” President Breaux said moments before teeing off. “We have a great turnout, great weather and a full course. Bowie State University and friends of Bowie State have really turned out today and I’m very pleased. I have a fabulous team and they’re here for our students just as I am.”

When asked about her intended performance on the green, President Breaux let out a hearty laugh. “Well that’s a different story,” she said modestly. “I just go out to have a great time and to spend time with our sponsors including SouthWest Airlines, Delmock Technologies and so many others who are here in support of our students.”

The classic drew nearly 100 golfers to participate Oct. 10 at the Country Club at Woodmore where over $30,000 was raised. The money is applied to support the athletic divisions of the university.

The classic has grown over the six years since its start when attendance was closer to 70 players. “We are up to 100 golfers this year and our sponsorships are up,” said Clyde Doughty, Jr. the athletic director at BSU. “It has been very effective because golf brings people together who may not normally connect. It gets alumni, staff, faculty and coaches and business leaders reunited. And the money raised goes directly into our account. It helps with scholarship dollars, equipment and travel.”

Sponsors included Delmock Technologies, Inc., DALY, ABM , Frito Lay, Johnson Controls, Wedderburn Innovative Solutions, The Bowie State University National Alumni Association , Cincture, NOVAD, Pinkie’s Art, Red Team Consulting , The 13th Man, Southwest Airlines, Marriott, Crofton Bowling Centre and Glenn Dale Golf Club.

Weyden Wedderburn, CEO of Wedderburn Innovative Solutions is an active alumnus of BSU. “My wife works at BSU as well,” he says. “The tournament has improved over the years. I’m impressed and encouraged by the number of participants and I will be joining next year. I’m a competitor and I want to be ready. But this is all about giving back. And any way I can do that, I’m all in.”

The golf classic isn’t the only area wherein BSU leadership handles competition.

We are looking to continue to build on excellence,” said Breaux who is the University’s 10th president. “BSU is on the move to grow our STEM areas and we brought in our largest incoming class this year – 1,077 students. We are going to do some amazing things this year. We will be partnering with K thru 12, community colleges and our business partners.”

President Breaux, who is the university’s first female president, envisions a global plan for BSU.

The winning teams of the tourney are as follows: 1st Place – RSC Mechanical & Technical Team; 2nd Place – Jeffrey Brooks’ Team and 3rd Place – Daryl Stone’s Team (BSU professor in the Department of Computer Science).
