Kevin Durant Drops $10 Million on County Schools

By Marc Hopkins

Kevin Durant continues to prove that he’s more than a future Hall of Fame baller. His off-court game is looking just as impressive as his play on the hardwood.

The Golden State Warriors’ power forward recently announced that he’s donating $10 million to create a partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools to help kids prepare for college.

Durant’s money will fund a program called College Track, which provides test prep classes, tutoring, college selection, and help with navigating the path to financial aid. Such scholarly amenities are often out of reach for families with modest resources.

College Track programs currently operate in California, Colorado and Louisiana. Durant’s largesse will bring College Track’s Maryland location to Prince George’s.

This isn’t the first time Durant has opened his wallet to help kids across the county. Far from it. In 2013, the Seat Pleasant native gave $150,000 to three community organizations in Prince George’s: the Seat Pleasant Activity, the Community Kinship Coalition, and the Maryland Jaguars Youth Organization. These donations were made through the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation.

His philanthropy isn’t limited to the county. Durant wants to ensure that people everywhere have access to well-appointed basketball courts.

In 2015, Durant created the Build It and They Will Ball initiative, in which basketball courts were created or rebuilt across the U.S. and abroad to give young people the chance to improve their lives through sports.

So far, courts have been set up in Berlin, New Delhi, India, Oklahoma City, Seattle, and Seat Pleasant.
