History Made Through Family Values
Angela Alsobrooks Wins Step Toward Becoming County’s First Woman Top Executive
By Raoul Dennis
To the sound of Stevie Wonder’s Signed Sealed, Delivered, Angela Alsobrooks made her way to the stage to make her victory speech as winner of the Democratic primary for County Executive in Prince George’s County.
As the county is predominately Democratic, Alsobrooks was also walking toward history.
A throng of cell camera paparazzi lovingly engulfed her, secure in the near 80,000 votes Alsobrooks had secured (by that point in the evening) and the potential for a bright and secure future for Prince George’s.
“What a long journey this has been,” she said with a broad smile. “What a victory it is for Prince George’s County. It’s not by accident that we started this campaign right in the driveway of [my parents'] home. The reason for that was to bring home the point that everything that happens in this community starts at home. This is where we should focus. This is where I learned all the values that have gotten me here tonight. And for every sacrifice that has been made by them I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you!”
First thanking God and her family, Alsobrooks recognized the long journey to the win and all the professionals who made it possible.
“This is the baddest campaign team I have ever seen in my life,” she said of the four in the morning til four in the morning kinds of hours that were dedicated to the nearly two-year campaign effort.
From the start, Alsobrooks’ campaign was a powerful coalition of family, community leaders and social networks. Their efforts were aggressive but remained above the fray of negative messages and finger pointing. Further, Alsobrooks’ team never took its foot off the gas even with a significant VIP anchored support base, a strong campaign bank account and a leading position in the polls. Team Alsobrooks took nothing for granted.
“Prince George’s believes,” Alsobrooks said. “We believe in our children. We believe in helping our seniors, we believe in the young men and young women in our county – that we can help them develop. We believe in Prince George’s County!”
Gathered at The Hotel at The University of Maryland, the 200+ Alsobrooks supporters leaned in as the next county Democratic leader spoke to the center of their concerns – and the reasons they supported her.
“We traveled from one side of the county to the next [during the campaign] so more than anything, I know Prince George’s. I know what’s on your heart,” Alsobrooks said passionately. “I know what keeps you up at night. I know your concerns for this school system – the performance of it and the reputation of it. I have come to understand it. We get it. We have heard you loudly and clearly, and we will respond.”
