County Leaders Open Doors To Next Public Hearing on Zoning Rewrite
The Prince George’s County Council's next Zoning Ordinance Rewrite meeting hearing for public comment on proposed bills is Tuesday July 17 at 2:30 p.m., in room 2027 of the County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro.
It’s an important meeting for county residents, homeowners and all stakeholders. The Tuesday meeting is just another step in the process but not the last.
In an exclusive interview with Prince George’s Suite Magazine & Media, County Council Chair Dannielle M. Glaros and Vice Chair Todd M. Turner explained the vital nature of the rewrite process.
“It’s a pretty weighty piece. We have not updated our code in about 50 or 60 years. The former council launched the zoning rewrite process to guide development and growth and to protect our rural areas and more. This year we have three bills in front of us,” Glaros says. “We are in a critical stage in the process (this summer). It has been exciting to hear the feedback.”
Turner explained the value of community input and buy-in to the process.
“It’s about making sure there is enough comfort with the majority before moving forward,” Turner says. “Legislation is never perfect the day you pass it. And given the weightiness of this issue and how it impacts the kind of future we want in Prince George’s County, we know we will have to go back and review it over a period of time. But it’s been clear with the previous council and the current council, we know we need to do something now. It’s been tried twice before and it’s not been successful. But we know we need to update our code if we want to move the county forward.”
