Taking A Toll?
Council Expresses Strong Opposition to the Transfer of the B-W Parkway from the National Park Service
County Council leaders fear that if the governor’s highway expansion plan works out, county residents could get taken for a costly ride.
The Prince George’s County Council, during session on Tuesday, July 17, authorized the Chair’s signature on a letter to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan expressing strong opposition to the transfer of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway from the United States Park Service to the State of Maryland. Governor Hogan’s highway expansion plan includes widening a portion of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and adding express toll lanes. Expanding I-295 would require the federal government to transfer the highway to the state of Maryland.
The letter supports Council Resolution CR-24-2018, adopted in April, declaring the Council’s opposition to the proposal to transfer the Baltimore-Washington Parkway from the National Park Service to the state of Maryland. The legislation notes the transfer could result in the establishment of toll lanes resulting in costly ridership.
