Alsobrooks Kicks Off 2019 Stuff-A-Truck Food Drive

“We need the community again to come forward and replenish [our food warehouse],” said County Executive Angela Alsobrooks as she placed canned goods and other foods in boxes to the county-wide food drive that launched Nov. 4. The county depleted its food supplies during the government shut down in January. “It was so heartbreaking for us to watch lines of people who came out because they needed this food,” she says. “So we want to be able to replenish it. Our warehouse is completely empty. This effort is going on the road and this truck will be traveling around the county until 7 p.m. tonight at the GIANT food store in Laurel. We need people to come out more than ever because our residents need us.”

The effort began at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the Wayne K. Curry Administrative Building in Largo. The truck will make stops at several locations throughout the day to gather food.

Alsobrooks led the kick-off of the 2019 food drive in a big rig carrying non-perishable food items to food banks and pantries to provide resources for residents living in food desert communities in Prince George’s.

The county executive reminded media in attendance that there are those across the county who may be in need especially as the Thanksgiving holiday is nearing. The goal this year is to collect food items for 500 families in need.

“We assume that everyone during the holidays will have enough to eat but the truth of the matter is we have so many in our community for whom food is an issue. So as you grocery shop for your family we are asking people to please pick up a few additional items.”

Anyone wishing to help can drop off non-perishable food items such as canned vegetables and fruits, peanut butter, soup, nuts, whole grain boxed cereal, dry goods, and baby items.

There will be various locations and dates for drop off donations.

More updates to come. Watch this space.
