Yet another positive notch can be etched onto the county’s ethical and management belt. This time, it has to do with fiscal management.
Prince George’s County has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
“We are Prince George’s Proud to be recognized for meeting the highest standards of governmental accounting and financial reporting, showing our commitment to transparency and accountability in County Government,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “We will continue to uphold these high standards for sound financial management and reporting as we deliver the high-quality government services our residents need and deserve.”
This is the 39th consecutive year that the Prince George’s County Office of Finance has received this recognition from GFOA. The Certificate of Achievement was awarded to the County’s Office of Finance under Director Stephen McGibbon, the agency responsible for compiling the County’s CAFR. The award was presented for Fiscal Year 2018, the most recent financial report compiled by the Office of Finance and audited by an independent firm of certified public accountants.
In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, a government must publish an easily readable and efficiently organized CAFR that satisfies both generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements. The County’s CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the GFOA program, which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.
