Bowie Bulldogs Take CIAA Championship For Second Consecutive Year—This Time Capping A Perfect Season

Bowie State Univerity’s working that old black magic again. Black and gold, that is.

For the second consecutive year, Bowie State University captured the CIAA Football Championship defeating Fayetteville State University by a final score of 23-7 Nov. 9 and remaining undefeated at 11-0.

This also marks the second season Bowie State’s Bulldogs have defeated Fayetteville State’s Broncos for the conference crown.

“It’s a great feeling winning the conference championship this year against a tough Fayetteville State program. Our guys did an outstanding job this year handling adversity and staying focused on winning each day at practice,” said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson.

The Bulldogs have been dominating opponents most of the season. Picking up where they left off last year, the team is working with a new quarterback in Junior Ja’rome Johnson but the scoreboard depicted the same results as it did in the 2018 season: Bulldogs win. Such a display highlights the strength of the BSU football program – and the growing strength of the team’s stingy, dominating defense.

The Bulldogs will host a face-off against the Carson-Newman University Eagles (8-2) in the opening round game of the NCAA playoff Nov. 23 at Bulldog Stadium in Bowie. This will be the first time the two programs will meet.

“We have put ourselves in position and earned another home game. This is great for the university and the Bowie community and we are looking forward to everyone coming to support on Saturday,” said Wilson. We are looking forward to the challenge this week versus Carson-Newman University. They have a very talented group and we must be physical up front on both sides of the ball.”

Bowie State defeated West Alabama last season (41-35) before losing to the eventual national champions of Valdosta State (66-16).

The top seed Valdosta State (10-0) will have a first-round bye. In other matchups, #2 Lenoir-Rhyne (11-0) will host Miles (8-2) and #4 Wingate (10-1) will host West Florida (7-2).
