A Call To Serve

Honoring The Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Compiled by Maria Lopez Bernstein & D.A. Phillips

“Life’s Most Persistent and Urgent Question Is: What Are You Doing For Others?” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A man of God, a man of peace, a man of service, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became one of the iconic leaders of the civil rights movement in the mid-1950s.  He was the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLS); Nobel Peace Prize recipient for fighting against racial inequality, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal among many honors and accolades.  His tireless efforts to push for civil rights for all came to an end when he was assassinated in 1968. A national holiday named for King is celebrated on the third Monday of each January. It has become recognized as “A Day of Service” – as one of King’s quotes attests, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”

Instead of a day off on January 20, 2020, individuals are encouraged to make it a day on. Men, women and children are encouraged to donate their time and services in helping those in need.

Many different events are taking place to honor Dr. King in Prince George’s County and around the DMV. Below are listed a few:
