German-Based Grocer Opens 2nd Store In Prince George’s
On June 19, 8601 Baltimore Avenue in College Park opened its doors as the newest Lidl (pronounced: leedle) store, a German-based chain that offers discounted prices on groceries and other goods. On opening day, shoppers were greeted with product samples and a free reusable bag.
A welcome addition to the Route 1 corridor, the store is 36,000 square feet and offers a simple, time saving, low cost strategy for the discount shopper. The layout is the same in all Lidl stores allowing customers the ease of locating what they seek quickly. Also, fewer brand selections are part of the Lidl strategy: the store partners with local and regional farms and suppliers offering high quality private label products. The combination of the same layout and smaller brand selections saves time in shopping.
Shoppers pack their own purchases. Bags cost .07 or shoppers bring their own bags. In exchange the item prices are lower in comparison to other stores.
Lidl opened its first grocery store in 1973 in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Since then they have grown and expanded across Germany, throughout Europe and now in the United States. Today they operate 10,500 stores in 29 countries including Prince George’s County’s first Lidl store on Annapolis Road in Bowie.
